StepWatch 5
TM
A clinically validated wearable medical device engineered to reliably capture gait and mobility data through stable wireless communication and dependable wireless charging.

Client
Modus Health develops clinically validated wearable devices used to accurately measure gait and mobility in medical and research settings. The StepWatch™ 5 is a critical product that relies on reliable wireless communication and charging for both clinical accuracy and user experience.
The Challenge
The StepWatch™ 5 was experiencing intermittent Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) connection discrepancies and unreliable wireless charging behavior. These issues affected data transfer reliability and user confidence, and required a clear technical root-cause analysis supported by measurable data before changes could be implemented.
Our Solution
Firstage Engineering performed a detailed investigation of the BLE communication issues, collecting and analyzing system-level data to validate the underlying cause. Based on this analysis, we developed and implemented targeted firmware updates and hardware modifications to resolve the communication discrepancies. In parallel, we debugged the wireless charging system, identified the root cause of the charging failures, and applied similar corrective actions. All solutions were validated through testing after implementation to ensure consistent, reliable performance.
Outcome
After the updates were applied, the StepWatch™ 5 no longer exhibited BLE connection issues and demonstrated reliable wireless charging behavior. The device achieved stable communication and charging performance, restoring product reliability and supporting continued clinical use.
